Services

Since CJA launched in 1973, we have worked to give every individual arrested in New York City an equal chance at release on recognizance, as well as the help and support they need during the pretrial process. NYC is a national leader in non-monetary release, and our pretrial staff work in the courts 24/7 providing evidence-based recommendations to facilitate more just outcomes. We also develop innovative programs that assist people after arraignment in making their court dates and finding helpful resources, which contributes to NYC's exceptional rate of people returning to court.

Release Assessment and Court Services

Interviewing nearly all individuals arrested and held for arraignment and making a pretrial release recommendation to the court. Other work includes helping individuals and their families pay bail, and conducting pilot programs that increase return to court.

Supervised Release

An alternative to pretrial detention in Queens that supports people in their communities, offers unique peer services, and encourages court appearance.

Outreach

The Outreach Helpline and Resource Guide provides answers and assistance to arrested individuals and their loved ones.

Evidence-Based Practice

The Evidence-Based Practice Department endeavors to inform the field through the integration of practitioner expertise and best available research.
